Weight Reduction

Plastics offer many advantages over metals including significant cost and weight reduction. Today’s plastic materials replace metal components in numerous industries providing extended service life and significant weight reduction of component parts. Engineering plastics have excellent strength-to-weight ratios approaching that of non-ferrous metals. Engineers can modify designs based on these lighter weights, simplifying installation procedures and reducing overall system weight. Weight reduction benefits include:  enhanced fuel economy, horsepower reduction of motors, reduced shipping costs and increase of available payload.

Converting metal to plastic can provide many performance benefits including:

  • Providing greater fuel economy
  • Allowing the use of smaller motors
  • Increasing available payload
  • Reducing shipping costs

Bed Bearing Replacement

Aluminum bearing clock with bronze insert was replaced with a one-piece acetal part reducing weight, eliminating the need for periodic lubrication and eliminating noise.
